On the Road
Day 1. Well, Day 3, actually. Day 1 was spent cleaning out the old house and giving everything we couldn’t fit in the Pod™ to Goodwill. Day 2 was spent on the road out of Oregon (there’s only one) and into California. We spent the night in a hostel in Redwood National (State?) Park, about 200 feet from the beach. The surf kept me up for a while, but I also worried about the black bear that supposedly lived near the hostel and came into the parking lot to vandalize your car while you slept.
We spent yesterday in the redwoods, driving through tree trunks and turning every photo opportunity into a suggestion that my genitalia are redwood-large. On our way through Humboldt County we listened to Animal Collective and Tom Petty. Last night we slept in a proper hotel, where our neighbor listened to 80s hair-metal for hours—completely unironically, as far as I could tell through the thin walls. Today we’re off to explore the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.
Some things I’ve learned so far: Rain-X works as advertised, but if we die in a fiery crash it’ll be because I got distracted watching the well-beaded drops dance around the windshield. Also, although they are called Coastal Redwoods, Coastal Redwoods cannot live directly on the coast, as they are intolerant of the salty spray.
